The Lovereading comment:

This is a visually stunning Atlas - more so than any we've seen before.  Kids will embark on a mind-expanding journey across the planet with pull-out maps, fact-filled booklets and fold-outs on most pages.  It's a book that can be viewed and read on a number of different levels to suit different ages of child and has a strong sense of purpose in that it focuses on the ideas and initiatives that might possibly help to create a sustainable future.

Very much an atlas for children for the twenty-first century, it also has a Barefoot World Atlas - Touch Press">fully integrated iPad App specially engineered to take advantage of the stunning new Retina display and quad-core graphics on the new iPad. It is Barefoot World Atlas - Touch Press">£5.49 from the App Store.  The TV presenter and Earth enthusiast Nick Crane is the guide whilst artist David Dean is the creator of the incredibly detailed and colourful maps.

Synopsis

Barefoot Books World Atlas by Nick Crane

Nick Crane comments: “To share the excitement, the wonder, the complexity of life on an orbiting planet, you need an atlas. This book opens the window on a great, big geographical adventure. It is an atlas for the next generation of discoverers.”

Divided by geographical region, the Barefoot Books World Atlas looks at the way in which communities and cultures across the world have been shaped by their natural environment, and at the ideas and initiatives which are shaping the future. It shows how all parts of the planet are interconnected and looks at the challenges which face us all in creating a sustainable future. The Barefoot Books World Atlas is printed on FSC paper and with text that introduces children to the ways the environment is changing and how people around the world are meeting this challenge. The introduction includes the story of the solar system and the history of map-making. Maps of regions and oceans bring faraway places to life, with illustrated geographical and architectural features, people plants and wildlife, from oil fields to Buddhist monks to the Amazon Rainforest.  Fold-out booklets reveal fascinating facts about each region.

Young readers of all ages will learn to:

-          navigate the world’s great oceans

-          explore east to west through changing environments

-          meet different peoples and learn their ways of life

-          encounter amazing wildlife

-          discover new, sustainable technologies
