Julia Eccleshare's comment:

Happy Birthday, Goodnight Mister Tom! Thirty years on, this remains the classic story of the Second World War. How Willie Beech, evacuated from London during the bombing, adapts to life in the country and, above all, to the wonderful world provided for him by Mister Tom before being dragged back to London by his troubled mother, is an emotional roller coaster. It also gives a great insight into how any child might survive the strange experience of evacuation. A wonderful and unmissable book.

Chosen as the Puffin Modern Classic 1980 - 1989

The LoveReading Comment:

A wonderful debut novel from an author who is now widely acknowledged as one of the great children’s novelists of our time. A storyline that will pull on the heartstrings more than most and provide moments of grief and joy in equal measure. Be sure to check out other books by this author. Just Henry, A Spoonful of Jam, A little Love Song, Cuckoo In The Nest.

A Message from Michelle Magorian:

'As a storyteller there's nothing I want more than to have people open one of my books, step into my characters' shoes and follow them.  Goodnight Mister Tom is the story of a man and a boy who are thrown together because of the outbreak of war. Through living together they heal one another.  I'm delighted that readers have enjoyed their journey for 30 years.  I hope they will continue to do so'.

Perfect for Reluctant Readers as well as keen readers.  To view other titles we think are suitable for reluctant readers please click here.

About The Author

Michelle Magorian

Michelle Magorian is undoubtedly one of the pre-eminent children’s writers of historical family drama and of books set around the Second World War. She may not be a household name but that’s purely because she doesn’t write as frequently as those more obvious bestselling novelists. Just Henry is her seventh novel. Unlike some authors Magorian writes when the time is right having first undertaken considerable research, followed by a lot of thinking time before actually putting pen to paper and then there’s always the very important rewrites to polish the story. Magorian loves the research and the writing in equal measure but particularly loves writing dialogue.

Interestingly, Magorian’s first love when she was younger was to be an actress but she also loved writing and day dreaming – the perfect combination for a successful novelist.
Here at Lovereading4kids we urge parents and children to try out the wonderful writing, experience the roller-coaster of emotions you’ll get from reading a Michelle Magorian novel. We’re confident you’ll be swept up into a time and place that should never be forgotten.
