The Lovereading comment:
This is a much-loved classic but as relevant today as it was when first published over 40 years ago. Its vivid and colourful illustrations and cut back and die-cut pages together with some very simple text provide a wonderful story that is immensely satisfying for parents and child alike. It’s a book that’s more threadbare than most in the nursery in my house.
Here are some wonderful resources inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which you can print off and enjoy:
Ideas for a Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party
Make your own Very Hungry Caterpillar collage
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Colouring Sheet
The Life of a Very Hungry Caterpillar
Draw your own Very Hungry Caterpillar lunch
It is now over 40 years since The Very Hungry Caterpillar was first published and each year it is celebrated on Very Hungry Caterpillar Day on 20th March. Make a note and why not celebrate too. The above resources can help.
Synopsis
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric CarleA newly hatched caterpillar eats his way through all kinds of food in this story aimed at the very young.
Reviews
Every child should experience this wonderful, cumulative story, with its brightly coloured pictures of the tiny but greedy caterpillar that eats his way through one apple, two plums and three pears before turning into a beautiful butterfly. The board version stands up well to the inevitable poking of little fingers through the holes in the pages. (2-4 yrs) (Kirkus UK)About The Author
Eric Carle is an internationally bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator of books for very young children. He was born in New York, but spent his early life in Germany. He returned to the United States in his early twenties and worked as a graphic designer and an art director before he began creating children's books. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Barbara. The Carles opened The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Massachusetts in 2002.
The first book he illustrated, written by Bill Martin, Jr., was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (1967). Carle then wrote and illustrated 1, 2, 3 To The Zoo (1968), and has been publishing children's books ever since. His distinctive collage-illustration has made his books instantly recognisable, and he has won numerous awards throughout his career. Some of Carle's most popular titles are The Mixed-Up Chameleon (1975), The Very Busy Spider (1984), The Very Quiet Cricket (1990) and The Very Lonely Firefly (1995).
